While playing three sports, as a tackle in football and forward in basketball, he is best remembered for his strong arm as a catcher on the baseball team. Many refer to him as the best catcher Point Pleasant ever produced. His success garnered the attention of both the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Korean War cut short his baseball career as he enlisted in the Navy. After his discharge he resumed his baseball career at the University of Louisville.
