Robert "Bob" Adkins

Bob Adkins was a multi-sport athlete for the Point Pleasant Big Blacks in the mid 1930’s and was an all-state performer in football and a state champion in track and field. Adkins then went on to star at Marshall under Coach Cam Henderson where he played fullback, blocking back, and end. He scored the winning touchdown for Marshall in the 1937 Buckeye Conference Championship Game, a season in which Marshall posted a 9-0-1 record. He graduated from Marshall and then played for the Green Bay Packers in the National Football League for two seasons. He enlisted in the United States Army after Pearl Harbor was bombed where he served for four years. After being discharged, he played for the Packers for two more seasons before breaking his leg in a game against the New York Giants. He then returned to Point Pleasant where he led the Big Blacks for three seasons from 1949-1951. He posted a 15-12-3 record as a head football coach. He retired from coaching after just three seasons. He later became a member of the Marshall University Hall of Fame and served several terms on the Mason County Board of Education.
